Letter of Intent Questions & Answers

Why do you want to study “management/finance/economics”

The first reason that led me study management is my father’s occupation. My father worked in the automotive industry in Turkey at different positions including working as the CEO of TOFAŞ, the Turkey branch of Fiat. In my 19 years life, I have always been familiar with the developments and changes in management, finance and economic fields. Starting from primary school, my teachers always underlined that I have a mathematical intelligence. The reason that I want management and finance instead of engineering is that the engineering fields are more recondite compared to management fields and secondly, in my opinion, engineering can only be successful if it is bonded with flawless management and financing. Because of the fact that human beings and relation management is always in the scope of a business, I believe that the future success will be brought by innovation and the inputs that will help the business become innovative are humans and perfect financing thus the keys for a business to succeed in any field are good financing, reliable economists and enviable managers.

In addition to what I have mentioned, I have been into management and financing world since my childhood. Firstly, starting from my primary school years, I have been given a fixed amount of pocket money and I always managed spending that fixed amount in a balanced way so that I never needed extra money. My grandfather, my mother and my father worked as high-level managers in different sectors and this gave me the chance to get to know what is going on in the management and financing world, thus I decided studying management/finance knowingly and willingly. Because of my family members’ occupations, as I stated earlier, there have always been daily newspapers and monthly finance, business magazines and reading these became a hobby for me that I never skip. Together with these, I attended the annual assessment meetings of sales and post sales departments of TOFAŞ. Lastly, I had several meetings with several professors from Koç University and Sabancı University, which are known worldwide and leading universities in Turkey.

I have a vision that can help me move towards my goals and I have already shaped my future plans after I get my college degree. My plan for the future is to work in a global company’s finance or other departments related to management for a period to gain experience in management and financing and later on I plan opening my start-up and get it grown. I have some start-up ideas in my mind but I think what I learn during my university years will make me more experienced and give me a new vision so that I can come up with different and more innovative start-up ideas that will be successful and satisfying a specific need of the society.

More than a job or a way to earn money, it has always been my dream to study in management or finance departments of a university known and respected worldwide. Now it is the time to take one more step towards my dreams. I am pretty sure that I will love studying in management/finance/economics departments and it will give me a lot of life experience and knowledge in the field while studying abroad in management/finance/economics departments.

What is your most important activity? Why?

The most important activity that I have been involved in is helping people who are old and who need help. Even I am into finance, I am planning helping people by offering them a hand of friendship not only supporting them financially. I take my father as an example for me about social awareness because he gave outright help to the third generation in Germany with their high school lessons for three years. My mother is also a good example for me about social awareness projects. She is a high-level manager in a global project founded in USA called Lions Club. Lions Club is the largest service club organization in the world and they offer free help to world citizens. My mother helps  old families who have French and Italian origin, living in Istanbul and who need both financial and emotional support. I grew up in a family that is concerned with social awareness projects and I think this is why social awareness projects and helping people have become a major part of my life.

While helping people and building friendships with people who need someone to give a hand, I connected it with finance and politics. I can never tolerate unfairness and this characteristic of mine made me very curious about the war in Syria and how it affects the citizens of the country. I have been reading about Syria’s current situation and the citizens of Syria and I have made some political and financial analysis on Syria as well. I have been interviewing and taking the ideas of people around me about Syria and I read comments both in Turkish and in English on internet to see a higher variety of ideas about Syria from people all around the world and these comments from all around the world helps me to shape my ideas about Syria. In addition, I have reviewed the currently written books, articles, newspapers about Turkey’s perspective on the situation in Syria and gathered information about the topic. As a result of the information I have gathered, I have worked on possible solutions of Syria and how my country, Turkey, can help the Syrian government and the citizens to rebuild a friendly and livable environment in their country.

What actions have you taken for your activity?

Together with my above studies, I made some face to face interviews with the Syrian refugees who are sheltered in Turkey because I did not want to analyze the topic only from the written documents but from using the views and thoughts of Syrian people who lived and saw what really happened in their country. In this way I aimed to come up with a more detailed analysis.

While doing my analysis, I did not want to work only on paper so I entered the field this summer to help the Syrian people. During my summer holiday in İzmir, where a great number of Syrian refugees live, I gave Turkish courses to the children and I gave basic English and French courses to the children who already knew Turkish. In addition to what I managed to teach to the children, I gave the children financial aid from my pocket money. Even it was a very little help, I like the feeling of sharing what I have in my hands with the people who need it more than I do.

The analysis that I have made is a very amateur analysis that I have been carrying with what I have in hand but I want to continue my analysis and possible solution recommendations for Syria and Syria citizens during my college years as well. I am sure that I can extend my analysis to a higher level with what I learn about design and analysis in university and with the vision that university will give me.
