Reflection papers are one of the basic homework required while taking entry level English classes such as ENG 101 or ENG 102. Even some highschool students are required to write reflection papers. This blog post firstly explains the meaning of the term ‘reflection paper’ and then gives two examples about two different news. The first news is about sports and the second news is about homicide news.
What Is a Reflection Paper?
A reflection paper is a type of essay that includes the thoughts or opinions of the students on some news, articles etc. or about an incident that is experienced by the student. Thus, the students are expected to understand the topic that they are going to reflect their thoughts on and then write about what they think about the particular reading or the incident.
Example 1: Reflection Journal About Sports News
Name of The News: Mehmet Okur Is Ready For The World Championship
I am interested in sports, especially in basketball and I always follow the news about sport events. There are few Turkish sporters who are famous all around the world and Mehmet Okur is one of those who achieved being a world famous sporter. We should follow and support our sporters. I am writing this reflection journal to share an important news about Mehmet Okur, our national team, and also to opine what I think about this news.
Utah Jazz center Mehmet Okur is playing for another NBA crown but he has one of his eyes on FIBA World Championship and he said that he is ready for the World Championhip.
FIBA World Championship will be held in Turkey, this year and it is a championship that will be held between many different countries. Mehmet Okur is willing to take place as one of the players of our national basketball team after a short break following the post-season. Turkish players are going to play in front of its own fans and Mehmet Okur wants to be in his best conditions.
“I’m ready for the 2010 FIBA World Championship,” Okur was quoted as saying on fiba.com. “My home country will host the biggest basketball event of the year and I hope that during the play-offs, I will not get injured. After the play-offs, I will hope to be in the national team with the best condition.”
Turkey hosted FIBA World Championship 9 years ago, in 2001 and our national team had a great succes in this championship. Mehmet Okur says that he hopes our national team will repeat our success that we had in 2001.
My Comment On This News
2010 FIBA World Championship is the second FIBA Championship that will be held in Turkey. These championships are very important for our country, because they are like advertsiments for our country and as we have success in these championships, our country will be advertised more and it will be known by everyone and it will become a big touristic country. We should support our basketball team in this championship and help them mentally to win this championship.
Example 2: Reflection Paper About Homicide News
Name of The News: 2 Days Old Baby Was Kiled For “Honor”
The crimes for honor are increasing everywhere in the world. These crimes are mostly about out-of-wedlock affairs and many babies, mothers are being killed violently by their grandmothers, grandfathers or any other relatives. A similar event to the post out-of-wedlock affair crimes happened on Friday and I want to write a news about this crime to inform my teachers and my friends about these kind of violent events that take place in our country, and also to write what to do to decrease the number of these violent crimes.
A two days old baby was dworned by her grandmother in the western province of Tekirdağ. The baby’s only fault was being a child of an out-of-wedlock affair.
İzzet Sapil, a twentyfive years old resident of the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, became pregnant from her boyfriend. She managed to hide her pregnancy from her family, but she then had to told her family about her child since she started to have labor pains.
Sapil’s family tokk her to a doctor’s private clinic then she delivered her baby in this clinic on April 14, but no official record was made of the birth.
After the birth of the baby, the family members had a alleged meeting and decided to kill the baby to clear their “honor”. After this decision, the grandmother of the baby drowned her and after the drowning, the baby’s body was buried in the garden of the family’s house and then concrete was poured over it.
The event was brought to light by the police on April 17. The police has found that İzzet Sapils mother, Türkan Sapil killed the baby and her three brothers buried her in the garden. Türkan Sapil and the three brothers are accused of having killed and buried the baby. The body of the baby has been removed from the garden and sent to forensic institution in Istanbul for examination.
My Comment On This News.
These kind of events are increasing in Turkey and these events are usually done by clueless people who has no education. To decrase these kind of events, the public of Turkey should be informed more about these kind of events and possible reasons, results of these events. There can be seminars that are organised by the government for the public, for free to inform the public about these kind of events.
