Travelling alone has always been a topic of discussion in terms of its pros and cons for travellers. This issue is examined under International Baccalaurate IB Oral Coursework task as well. The below script is taken from an IB Oral Coursework presentation about pros & cons of travelling alone.
Hello, my name is Academyden Blog and my candidate number is 0111. In Today’s IB Oral Coursework I’m gonna talk about travelling with guides both its pros and cons. I’m going to decide whether travelling with guides is profitable or not, but handing down an exact decision on this topic is like being between the devil and deep sea.
Firstly I want to start with the pros of travelling with guides. Guides know every inch of your destination area, like hotels, means of transportation, food, history and etc. Let me just examine all these in detail.
First is first they know about transportation. If you don’t know a lot about transportation facilities of a city, I’m sure that you will have great difficulties with transportation especially if you are travelling in a big, crowded city. I have a great example for this. Once I was travelling in İstanbul with my family. BTW, you know istanbul is the most crowded city of Turkey. It was the first time that we had been in istanbul and we decided to go to a mosque in İstanbul. We had our own car. We asked the way to several people and began our little journey. It ought to took nearly 30 minutes but we could reach the mosque in nearly 3 hours. I wish we had guide to take us to the mosque.
Secondly, Food is very important for me. I think, eating habits show the culture of a place, so, it is very important to taste all the foods of a city and fortunately, a guide knows a lot about food. Also, if you travel with a guide, you can taste the foods cheaper.
No doubt, it is really important to know about a place’s history and culture. Of course we can search about a place by using books or internet but, for sure, a guide knows more than your researches and he(or she) can tell you about a place. Also, a guide can mention interesting facts and events, which can’t be found easily.
Charity begins at home. While travelling, we should take care of ourselves. Every city have insecure places and we can’t know whether a place is secure or not, but, unlikely, a guide knows about a cities insecure places and he(or she) can inform us about these places, so your journey becomes more safe for you. I have a memory from İzmir. Once I went to İzmir with my family. In the second day of our journey, I went to a neighbourhood, called Buca. I was going to meet with some of my friends. That was the first time that I had been in Buca. I got there by bus and started looking around, for my friends. While waiting, 5 guys, with sun glasses came nearer and they wanted to grab my money. Thanks to the people around, they couldn’t do anything to me. After this event, I learnt that Buca is one of the most dangerous places in İzmir. I didn’t have any guides, but of course, if I had a guide with me while travelling, he would certainly tell me where to go.
As sure as a gun, making new friends is very important for a person. Because, a person can become more social by having new friends. Even if you are in different countries, you can just exchange letters. The point is, while travelling with a guide, you probably have other people that you see for the first time. While travelling you can just strike up a friendship with these people. Last year, I went to Mother Mary Church in İzmir. It was summer and there were a lot of foreign people visiting the church. That was the second time that I had been in izmir and this time I was travelling with a group of tourists and we had a guide. Our guide was very sincere and he liked me so much. He introduced me to some American tourists. I took their e-mail adresses and since that day, I have been sending and recieving e-mails once or twice a month. That helps me to learn about the events in different countries and to improve my English writing skills.
Now I’m moving onto last and one of the most important advantage of travelling with guides. You know, time is money. If you are travelling with a guide you can everywhere you want like the clappers. Because, as I mentioned before, travel guides know the transportation facilities and the properties of places well, so they can take you everywhere you want quickly.
There are many profitable facts about travelling with guides but all that glitters is not gold. There are some disadvantages of travelling with guides.
First is first, freedom is one of the most important things in a persons life. A person should know how to live freely, with no help from other people. While travelling with guides, we just do what the guide says and we move from places to places depending on the instructions of the guides.
Also, we don’t try to go from a place to another place, so we become free-rider and spoon-fed, since the guide prepares everything for us and we don’t learn how to organize ourselves.
To me, we can learn the places that we go better, if we just travel without guides. If we organize ourselves, we can learn more about a city. Because, we can never forget a place which we observed every inch of it. It stays in our mind all the time, because we didn’t learn it readily. Put it easy, our vacation becomes more profitable for us.
To sum up, travelling with travel guides have both some pros and cons, but the pros are more than the cons. So I can say that, travelling with guides is beneficial for us. We can learn more about a place, travel faster and safely and we can make friends. But, at the same time, we can just become spoon-fed and we can forget some details about our travel, since we didn’t observe everything by ourselves.
