This article is about the positive and negative sides of the body image created by the media channels. The article starts with the affects of magazines on body image, continues with the unhealthy body image on young women and then continues with media affects body image counter argument.
Magazines and Body Image
The first magazine, called The Gentelman’s Magazine, in 1731 and after that time magazines have become a huge part of our lives for nearly 300 years. The magazines have both positive and negative effects on our life and one of the negative effects of magazines on our life is sending unhealty signals to young women.
Unhealthy Body Image and Body Dissatisfaction
The first of the unhealthy signals that the magazines send to young women is creating the perfect body image. Kasey L. Serdar says the sociocultural standarts about the beauty of women are shaped in every form of popular media and espacially in magazines and this gives the women an image of body shape that is considered as the ideal body (Kasey. L. Serdar, “Female Body Image and the Mass Media: Perspectives on How Women Internalize the Ideal Beauty Standard”, West Minster College Research Journal,2014, p.1).
He also adds that, the women of all ages are being disturbed by the magazines and the women who can not have the ideal body shown in magazines are dissatisfied with their bodies and this results in mental health problems (Serdar, p.2). He says that the half of young women want to be thinner according to studies (Serdar, p.3)
Media Affects Body Image Counter Argument
Some researchers think in another way. Fang Wan and Tamara L. Ansons say that the over bombarding of the ideal body shape for women on magazines does not affect the women anymore. (Fang Wan, Tamara Ansons, “Defensive reactions to slim female images in advertising: The moderating role of mode of exposure”, Elsevier, January 1 2013, p.39) The two researchers also says that some people feel better when they see the slim models on the magazines. (Wan & Ansons, p.40)
Conclusion – Arguments & Counter Arguments About Body Image
To conclude, there are two different opinions given by different researchers but in my opinion Kasey L. Serdar’s thoughts about the magazines that send unhealthy images to women are more reasonable. As a young woman, I think that every young woman would want a good body shape but unfortunately only a small group of women have the perfect body image. Women always want what the other women have in their hands. So, this time it would be right to say that most women want the body shape that is shown as the ideal body shape because nearly every women want to look good to the people around them. The women who do not have the ideal body shape will be affected mentally and also their self esteem will be affected negatively. So, as a result, magazines send unhealthy signals to young women.
