Introduction to Forrest Gump
Good morning everyone, as most of you know, my name is Linda and I study management. Today I am going to talk about Forrest Gump and my talk is divided into two parts as wrong political and moral messages. Firstly, I will introduce the movie than talk about the wrong messages.
Forrest Gump is a 1994 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis and the movie tells about the life of the main character, Forrest Gump, where he is portrayed to be a unintelligent person who is truly in love with a girl named Jenny Curran.
Wrong Political Messages in Forrest Gump
Now, I want to move on to wrong political messages in Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is portrayed as a very innocent person from his childhood up to when he becomes a grown-up. He is not a man of critical thinking and he lives his life in a perfectly spontaneous way. As Forrest Gump does not have any understanding of critical thinking, he lives depending on his luck and at every milestone of his life, something very positive happens that he would not afford to do even if he planned to do so. A good example for this is, in primary school, while running away from a fight towards the football pitch, recruiters notice him and gives him a sports scholarship in a perfect college. As a second example, he joins the army accidentally and in the army he meets his new friend Bubba and after that the two becomes millionaire. So, where does these examples lead us? We can come up with a result about Forrest Gump’s luck as, if you do not question the system, you will be lucky in life but if you question the system, you will not be lucky and successful at all.
Wrong Moral Messages in Forrest Gump
We have seen that the movie gives wrong political messages, let me move on to the wrong moral messages of the movie. Forrest Gump is portrayed as a very innocent character in the movie and he is expected to behave the same way throughout his whole life. In the movie, we do not see Forrest Gump with the feelings of anger or fear and he is always expected to be nice to everyone around him. An example at this point will better clarify what I mean, even the girl he loves, Jenny Curran, behaves very badly to Forrest Gump, he is still expected to be nice and polite towards her. In addition to that, before moving on with the conclusion, there is another example in which Forrest Gump makes a speech but while talking the volume of the amplifiers are turned off and no one listens to him. These examples lead us to say that the movie takes intellectually problematic people into account as half-person and they are not allowed to behave like everyone else in the society.
To conclude, even Forrest Gump has been considered as a great movie by many critics and authorities but it gives some wrong moral messages about politics and people that have intellectual problems. The movie gives the perception that people will be better if they do not criticize the system and people that have intellectual problems are not ought to be taken into account as normal people.
Before finishing, I am happy to anwer any questions. Thank you for listening.
