Genetic Disorders and Babies
As scientific studies suggest, genetic disorders have been affecting several races and genders. It has been a great debate whether people with genetic disorders should be having children or not. Even if there is a high risk that the offspring of people with genetic disorders will eventually get affected by the disorders, everyone should have the freedom of choice about having babies and parent should be free to decide about this issue on their own without any external interference. This paper will touch upon the reasons that support the freedom of choice of parents with genetic disorders about having babies.
Should People With Genetic Disorders Have Babies
In the first instance, it is not rule of thumb that the offspring of the people with genetic disorders is certainly going to be affected by the disorders. Parents can have a healthy baby with the help of today’s improved technology such as genetic engineering. By the aid of technological and scientific improvements in the area of medicine, doctors are now capable of repairing the mutated DNAs which lead to genetic disorders in the offspring so that the children will be born healthy. On the other hand, governments in all around the world support the treatment of mutated DNAs. So, if anyone who wants to have baby without passing his or her genetic disorders to the offspring can easily reach this technique of treatment and have healthy babies by using the financial aid that is provided by the governments.
In addition to all these, most of the countries need young population of citizens. Considering that the proportion of people with genetic disorders is a huge number in the whole population of the world, allowing and encouraging people with genetic disorders have babies is a good opportunity for the governments to have a young and controlled population of citizens. In this case, it is a reasonable idea to let the people with genetic disorders have babies which is both for the sake of governments, countries and the people themselves.
In addition to the treatment of genetic disorders, this topic should be approached from the point of view of people with genetic disorders. It is a common idea that all people in all around the world should have the same rights with the others. So, if the people with genetic disorders are not treated in the same way with all the other people about having babies, they will feel that they are excluded from the society and this will make them isolate themselves from the rest of the people around them and in the end they will become so-called outsiders.
Genetic Disorders and Mental Ilness
Secondly, the isolation of people with genetic disorders from the society can result in mental illnesses. If we do not let people with disorders have kids, they will have other types of disorders such as mental illnesses and this is bad for both the society and for the people themselves because they will suffer from more disorders and they will not add as much as they used to add to the society if they are suffering from mental disorders. In addition, babies can be a great reason for the people with genetic disorders to have a healthier and better lifestyle.
People who have genetic disorders may be having an unhealthy lifestyle by thinking that they are already ill but if these people have babies, this may lead them to have a healthy lifestyle that will make them happier. Last but not the least, we should not stigmatize people with different label. Saying directly to the people with genetic disorders that they are different from the rest of the people around them in a negative way is a way of stigmatizing these people which will give harm to them in terms of mental issues and they will feel alone and outstanding in the society.
Genetic Disorders and Children
Lastly, some people are against the idea that people with genetic diseases should have babies and they suggest that the children of the people with genetic diseases do not have to suffer the same diseases with their parents and having babies by knowing this issue is not ethical. This idea is not a reasonable way of thinking because firstly, as stated in the earlier parts of the paper, the technology in the area of medicine has improved tremendously and there are great improvements in science.
Genetic engineering is a product of these improvements and with today’s technology it is possible to cure the DNAs which are mutated and in this way the children will not suffer the same illness with their parents. Secondly, another product of improved science and technology of the twenty first century is in the field of medicines. New medicines can help the children cure their mutated DNAs and in this way even if the babies are born with the same disorders with their parents, the disorders can be cured by the new medicines in the early ages. In addition to the medicines, new techniques of treatment can be applied to the babies in early ages if they are born with genetic disorders and these treatment techniques have a high rate of success.
To conclude, it is no one but the parents that has the right to decide whether to have a baby or not. People with genetic disorders should be provided with the chance of having a child. Firslty, with the improvements in technology and medicine, it is now possible that the people with genetic disorders can have healthy babies and this process is supported by governments and the financial requirements can be met by the parents with the government aid. Secondly, all people should have equal rights and no one should be seen as different in the society.
If we do not allow people with genetic disorders have babies, they will feel excluded from the society and they may have some mental problems as a result of being excluded from the society. Lastly, even some argue that the children do not have to suffer from the genetic disorders but with the improved technology, science and medicine the children can now be treated in their early ages if any genetic disorder is passed from the parent to the children. New technology, medicine and treatment techniques can be used in order to cure the children and they are not supposed to suffer from the genetic disorders. As a result of all these issues, people with genetic disorders should have the right to decide on whether they should have a baby or not on their own. There should be no government interference or the society should not judge these people with their choices on whether or not to have a baby.
