Definition of Smartphone
Smartphone is defined as “a device that lets you make telephone calls, but also adds in features that, in the past, you would have found only on a personal digital assistant or a computer, such as the ability to send and receive e-mail and edit Office documents” (Liane Cassavoy, p.1). The smartphones have become a major need in our dailylife. It is so important in today’s world that people cannot stand even one hour without a smartphone or people never leave their homes in the morning without taking their smartphones with them.
As the smartphones have become extremely important for us, they have started affecting our daily lives and the impacts of smartphones have grown very huge. The impacts of smartphones on daily life can be categorized as positive impacts, such as easy shopping and easiness while reaching to information and negative impacts, such as decrease in communication between people and getting addicted to smartphones and losing mental and physical health. The aim of this article is to touch upon both the positive and the negative impacts of smartphones on people’s daily lives.

Positive Effects of Smartphones In Our Daily Life
The first positive impact of smartphones is about changing people’s shopping habits. In the past, people had no choice apart from shopping from a mall or a supermarket near their houses but now, with the aid of smartphones, people changed their shopping habits to online shopping. People can shop online without smartphones, just by using their personal computers or laptops but what makes smartphones so attractive? The reason is the easy and safe use of smartphones.
Today, all the brand new smartphones have a NFC kit on them. NFC kit is a way with which “a tap of your mobile phone providessecure, keyless, and card-less access to your home, car, hotelroom, workplace even mass transit automatically paying and checking you in as necessary” (Anand, Kumar, p.1) The smartphones no more requires your credit card information or any other extra information for the payment process in online shopping this easy and safe usage is what makes smartphones a part of our daily life.
In addition to this, smart phones can now be used as barcode readers by using some applications from appstore or google play. In this way we do not need to carry any papers with us if we have a coupon and also while shopping, we can learn the price of a good by using the barcode reader applications of our smartphones. This way people save time in their daily life by the aid of smartphones.
The second positive impact of smartphones on daily life is about the health issues. “Surveys show that more than 10 million users in the USA use smartphones to search for health information and facilities” (Soomro, 220). This number is expressed in millions in Turkey as well. Today, it is very easy to get a doctor appointment and people can do this in seconds. The smartphone users use mobile websites and mobile applications of government and also of the hospitals to get appointments.
In addition to this, people can get online help about their health issues and this help is very easy to reach and also provides reliable information about the health issues. Even it is not as efficient as seeing a doctor but people gather information about simple illnesses. In addition, people can look for the symphtoms or curing process of an illness very easily via using a smartphone.
Negatife Effects of Smartphones In Our Daily Life
Even smartphones have positive impacts on our daily life such as the effects written in the earlier parts of the article, the smartphones can also have negative impacts on our daily life as well. The first negative impact of smartphones on our daily life is the decline in the communication between people. The smartphones have the ability to answer nearly all the questions that we may need to ask to anyone in our daily life.
Before people had easy access to smartphones and internet, they needed to ask other people to learn something but in today’s world what people do is just to use their smartphones to access information. Additionaly, people do not prefer to communicate with other people in their free time and instead they play with their smartphones for social media applications such as instagram, facebook, twitter, swarm and etc. and also for online games. Even some smartphones can talk to people about daily activities. Siri is an excellent example for this.
The users can ask Apple’s new application Siri even the question “how are you?” and Siri will answer the question. People no more needs to communicate with other people if they are not supposed to communicate. In addition smartphones give the chance of free texting between the smarphone users via the help of applications such as whatsapp, line etc. and this decreases the interaction between people. Since texting is not the same as talking face to face, people cannot express themselves properly and this issue may also lead to misunderstandings between people such as understanding the tone of the online text message in a different way.
In the earlier parts of the artical, it is stated that the smartphones have positive impact on our daily health issues but they may also be negative both for people’s mental and physical health. The smartphones are getting an addiction for people and even at nights people go to their beds with their smartphones and they sleep with their smartphones just by their sides. This makes people check their e-mails, social media accounts etc. And in this way people face challenges in sleeping well and not having a proper sleeping habit affects people’s whole life.
In addition to this, daily work life becomes a torture to people because as e-mails or other materials related to work can be reached any time by using a smartphone, people are expected to get to work and do things about work by using their smartphones. This change in people’s daily life can also be unhealthy in terms of both physical and mental health.
Conclusion
To conclude, Smartphones have become a part of our daily life and they have a huge impact on our daily life. The impacts of smartphones can be both positive and negative. The positive impacts of smartphones are about reaching information about health and other issues, easy use of getting doctor appointments and easy shopping chances. The negative impacts of smartphones are change in work life and social life and losing both mental and physical health as a result and also decreasing communication between people in everyday life.
